Nishijin Goshuin Books –

kyo-craft_workshop_images_03

A goshuin is a stamp or seal impression given as proof of pilgrimage, typically collected in a special booklet. The origins of goshuin are varied, but it is believed to have started as “nōkyō ukejō,” which were receipts given to monks known as “Rokujūroku-bu Kairiku Hijiri” who traveled throughout Japan, visiting 66 sacred sites and offering sutras.

The cover of the booklet is made from Nishijin-ori, a traditional textile produced in the Nishijin district of Kyoto. Designated as a traditional craft of Japan, Nishijin-ori is a type of pre-dyed patterned fabric. Its production involves many intricate processes, including planning and design, pattern drawing, yarn dyeing, warping, weaving, and the use of gold and silver threads, as well as ikat processing. Each step is meticulously handled by skilled craftsmen working in cooperation.
You can choose from a variety of beautiful Nishijin-ori fabrics to create a unique and special booklet just for you.
